| Summary: | ‘Singing Out’ is a compilation of interconnected writings, conversations and photographs created by local Aboriginal ladies Freda Sing Poo, Maria Sebastian, Annette Riley, Carlene Wise, Rosita Stumpagee, Michelle Ejai and Elizabeth Skeen Morton. The book, about their diverse educational experiences while growing up in the Northwest Kimberley, also features interviews the ladies conducted with June Pederson, Lucy Marshall, Pat Latham, Biddy Dale, Susan Bangmorra, Jasmine Francis and Bessie Ejai. “We gathered in Derby, Western Australia to write down the history of our learning – the learning we got in schools and the learning we got in community. “We wanted to tell the stories of languages, kin, camping and country as well as stations, missions, hostels and boarding schools,†said the women in a collective statement. The project was coordinated by Maya Havilland and Rachel Breunlin from the University of New Orleans.
