| Subtitle: |
Guests: Alan Barlee, Deborah Hart, m.fl. |
| Summary: |
It is time to change the way we talk about renewables and emissions targets. First of all, we need to stop the confusing use of percentages in relation to a specific year. Instead, when we all express our results and targets in carbon-tonnes per capita per year, the figures suddenly become transparent and comparable. "It is all a bit of a scam," says our guest in The Sustainable Hour today, Alan Barlee, as we discuss the confusion which reigns whenever politicians talk about emissions and renewable energy targets. The Sustainable Hour - 5 November 2014 |
| Author: |
Mik Aidt and Anthony Gleeson |
| Subtitle: |
Guests: Jane Kempe, Colin Mockett |
| Summary: |
Change will come from the ground up. On 29 November 2014, residents in Victoria will be voting on who should be their leaders in government. In this and the following Sustainable Hours, we look into what this means. Today we talk with two artists about the topic: Colin Mockett who is an actor and entertainer, and Jane Kempe who is a painter and a cartoonist.
"The mainstream candidates are much too busy standing behind their leaders and having the photograph taken, or standing on street corners and giving away things, and having their photograph taken, and they aren't concerned with what I want them to be concerned with, of which the environment is front and centre. I am concerned that the environment is being largely ignored by the mainstream candidates. Instead of just all the feelgood-stuff that they have been saying, if we can get them to address the issue, we have at least done something," says Colin Mockett. He challenged two candidates in his electorate over Facebook. As Number One, he wrote, he would like to see the Anglesea power station shut down, and the anti-wind farm laws repealed. He got a reaction from both candidates.
"Change will come from the ground up. It is not going to come from the top down. Fossil fuels are literally that: they are fossils. They are out of date. So there is a will on the part of the people to take initiatives. Some politicians have misread where the electorate stands on this," says Jane Kempe. She has worked with arts projects around the world where politics meets arts, and where arts is used to create awareness and focus on the environment. "I get a great deal of satisfaction knowing that I can make a difference with my art as well, in things that I feel strongly about," she says. The Sustainable Hour - 29 October 2014 |

Guest: Dr Andrea Bunting. Via phone: Dr Jacinta Morahan |
| Summary: |
Climate morals, psychology and engagement. Scientists are telling us that the cost of inaction on climate change keeps rising every day we continue business as usual. To change this dangerous situation, we need to first understand the psychological mechanisms that make so many people shut off entirely from the whole discussion. To help us with this, we have a social psychology researcher, Dr Andrea Bunting, with us in the 49th Sustainable Hour. She is Honorary Research Fellow at Latrobe University, School of Psychological Sciences and explains about her research in the psychology behind moral attitudes to climate change. Andrea Bunting is saying: Let's speak about climate change! More about this, and about the booklet with the same title, below on this page.
We have two special reasons to celebrate in The Sustainable Hour today. First of all, this is 'Day One' in a new and greener City of Greater Geelong council. A council which now has a policy and a strategy on how to manage some of the biggest challenges we are faced with today - climate change being one of them. The 'Environment Management Strategy' was finally approved in Council on 28 October 2014, after having been two years on its way. And around 30 people had come to celebrate that moment together with the councillors. We have a report from the Council meeting, and a short statement from Councillor Andy Richards about the process which created the strategy. The other reason is that on 30 October 2014, The Sustainable Hour is one year old. We broadcasted our first show one year ago, and there are now 49 podcasts out there on the internet to show for it! - Read more: www.climatesafety.info/thesustainablehour49 |

| Summary: |
"There is only one train, and that is the green train. If you are not on that train, you will be left behind on the platform," said Lars Aagard, CEO of the Danish Energy Association recently. The 48th Sustainable Hour on 22 October 2014 on 94.7 The Pulse is about things we can do to save money while at the same time taking personal action on climate change. We introduce you to Heidi Fog from Balanced Sustainability who is an expert in energy audits and who consults families, kindergartens and schools to help them save money and reduce carbon emissions. We ask her for some concrete advice on how we take action on climate change and reduce our carbon footprint. We also talk with Graeme Stockton from Surf Coast Energy Group who is the organiser of the forum 'Growth! Is Bigger Better' and who has assembled a prestigious line-up of guest speakers to talk about the big issues of the 21st century - in Torquay on 16 November 2014. And we talk with one of the Pacific Warriors, Mika, who have been spearheading a busy week of climate campaigning in Australia. |

| Summary: |
How can we effectively reduce our fossil fuel emissions to zero? Will we have to wait for federal politicians and negotiations in the United Nations before we can begin the transistion away from burning coal, gas and oil? Not at all! Many cities, councils, municipalities, shires and boroughs have already started that journey. The first step is to write a strategy, allocate funds, formulate the goals, and then start working on how to get there.
The Borough of Queenscliffe has already done this. And neighbouring City of Greater Geelong Council is in the process of doing it.
In the 46th Sustainable Hour on 8 October 2014 we talk with Queenscliff mayor Helene Cameron about their carbon strategy to learn what it takes to become 'carbon neutral', and we talk with Dr Quentin Farmar-Bowers, a retired researcher from Deakin University, about carbon sequestration and what we are to make of this new technology. |

| Summary: |
Sunday 14 September 2014, a minor political miracle was completely ignored by mainstream media. It took place in Moriac, a small countryside town of 800 residents, some 15-20 minutes drive from Geelong, where politicians from all major parties at federal, state and local level assisted the citizens of four small towns to declare themselves 'gasfield free'. In the 43rd Sustainable Hour on 94.7 The Pulse we learn that while the Victorian government pulls strings behind the scenes to protect the gas industry, that the so-called 'scientific studies' which it refers to, for instance when claiming the fugitive emissions or water contamination is not a problem, have been compromised. Hear Alan Roberts explain why the gas mining industry can be trusted when it claims that unconventional gas is cleaner that coal. Even CSIRO, a well-respected scientific Australian organisation, is compromised and can't be trusted, according to Alan Roberts.
As a lead-up to a public information meeting about onshore gas exploration which is held in Geelong on 18 September 2014 (more info about that on www.climatesafety.info/gasrush), we also take a deeper look at whether the toxic chemicals which the onshore gas industry uses to extract the gas really can be 'Generally Recognized As Safe', as the industry calls it. A state election is approaching in Victoria in November. Will we hear any of the candidates talk about sustainability, onshore gas exploration, or climate change policy in their debate at public election meetings and in the media? A new initiative is going to work hard to make sure that in City of Greater Geelong, you must likely will! The grassroots movement GetUp, which has a membership list of 677,500 Australians, recently started a 'Vote Clean' campaign in Geelong, and on 3 September 2014 three members of the team visited the Sustainable Studio on 94.7 The Pulse. They are mobilising hundreds of volunteers to have thousands of conversations about clean energy and climate change policy in Geelong region in the next three months. |

He has come from Melbourne to talk with us and our listeners about the projects and activities which Friends of the Earth are rolling out in Geelong. Most of them are focused around the Victorian state election which will take place on 29 November.
We also talk with investment expert Tim Buckley about the current coal and gas industry economy - and about why he thinks the Anglesea coal power station would already be considered a stranded asset if it wasn't for the fact that it is being protected by Australian government policy. --- Geelongians, get involved: host a kitchen table conversion:

| Summary: |
When governments protect and promote the coal and gas industries at a time when the entire world is talking about that coal and gas urgently need to be phased out due to the climatic complications caused by the burning of it, who then will protect the people? Who will protect and promote its health, jobs and future prosperity? Whose responsibility is it to protect our drinking water and clean air, our renewable energy sector and to create strong action on climate change if not the government's? The answer was suggested by Drew Hutton from Lock the Gate Alliance: "When our leaders fail us, then ordinary people have got to become heroes." This is really what is happening in this the 37th Sustainable Hour on 94.7 The Pulse: meet two men who are neither ordinary nor heroes, but who are deeply concerned about the gas and coal issues respectively, and who would never have predicted just two years ago that one day they would be talking in a radio show about such topics as this. And now just listen how well they are doing it!

Audio-postcard from the future of fracking. 1.3 million hectares of land in Victoria is threatened by unvoncentional gas mining. Surf Coast, the Otways... even areas right up to the city of Geelong are at risk of being turned into industrial gasfields. Geelong Council resolved at their meeting on Tuesday 22 July 2014 to commence a 30 day process to educate Council on the issue of 'fracking'. Council will be seeking advise from relevant State government departments and agencies as well as experts in various fields. Council will also review any information provided by community groups and individuals. The 36th Sustainable Hour contains an 'audio-postcard' produced for the councillors who are seeking education on this issue. We hope they will listen. --- For photos, lots of links, music videos, online listening or download of excerpts, and more information, go to: http://climatesafety.info/?p=8392 |

| Summary: |
Pathways to safe climate restoration. Welcome to the 33rd Sustainable Hour on a wet and windy day in July - which is not going to keep us from talking about the sun - about solar energy and solutions to climate change problem. Today we are going to be talking honestly and seriously about this problem.
And we should apologise in advance: The Sustainable Hour is going to get inconvenient today. Because we need to talk about what will be able to cause that breakthrough which can put us on a pathway back to a safe climate - a topic which was discussed in-depth at a conference in Melbourne on 21-22 June 2014.
And not the absurd way climate change and carbon tax is currently being debated in the Australian senate. Politicians, CEOs and a high percentage of citizens try to turn science into a system of belief because it would be so convenient for their businesses if climate change wasn't really occuring. But they are fooling themselves. It is happening.
We have prepared three short audio excerpts from the conference for you which highlight the urgent need to respond to the climate crisis, and we discuss the possibilities of restoring a safe climate.

The Sustainable Hour - 2 July 2014 |

| Summary: |
The renewable revolution is rolling. Whether the Australian government likes it or not. Across the world, clean energy is booming, now producing more than 20 percent of the world's electricity needs. And the clean energy is cheaper than polluting fossil fuels in many countries - including Australia.
The federal government wants to reduce the country's Renewable Energy Target while it keeps subsidising the fossil fuel industry with over $10 billion dollars every year, and in Victoria, the state government has put various regulations in place to protect its allies in the coal and gas industry with anti-wind farm laws and investing in coal and gas projects rather than in renewables.
The logic response to this kind of climate inaction among our elected leaders is energy action at community level. Citizens are saying "When politicians won't protect our climate, then we must do it ourselves." And then they begin to figure out what it takes to start community-owned co-ops that run solar and wind farms to the benefit both for people and climate.
In The Sustainable Hour today, you will meet some of these people. They met at a congress in Canberra recently, and we bring a first-hand report from the event.
Citizens are also saying, "When politicians won't protect our farm land and nature parks from the toxic coal and gas mining industry, then we must do it ourselves," and then they get together in community groups that mobilise resistance against the new coal and gas projects which are being rolled out. Enter Alan Manson - one such example of a citizen who recently took on the task to educate and mobilise residents in his own neighbourhood, Grovedale, about the dangers and stupidity of fracking. Alan Manson came to The Sustainable Hour to talk about the new anti-fracking community group he has established: Frack Free Grovedale.
This is Geelong calling: Welcome to The Renewable Revolution.

In this the 29th edition of The Sustainable Hour on 94.7 The Pulse, we talk about what a city's councillors could and should be doing in order to ensure that its teenagers don't lose hope on climate change. Number one: allocate funds in the budget that enable the council as well as the community to take action and invest in the kind of solution-building that generates optimism and a feeling of community empowerment.
Placing responsibility for the mess that the current political inaction is creating, which, when it comes to climate change, seems to only get more and more absurd as time goes by - isn't this a matter of the law rather than just activism and letter-writing? Should these people and companies who are responsible for the climate damage, victims and suicides be taken to court? Will there come a day when this could actually happen?
We talk with a lawyer about that: Ariane Wilkinson. She works for Environmental Justice Australia, a citizen-funded, not-for-profit, public interest legal practice, using the law to protect and restore Australia's environment.
Ariane Wilkinson attended a public forum on unconventional gas mining and 'fracking' on 28 May 2014 in Winchelsea, where Lakes Oil executive chairman Robert Annells gave a presentation along with four gas mining and health experts. She explains what she took home from that meeting.

Climate change, media and money. While Lismore City Council aims to go 100 per cent renewables in ten years, the City of Greater Geelong Council has approved a draft budget with sustainability initiatives receiving little or no funding. "We need to have a mature discussion about what is happening to our environment," wrote Michael Martinez in an opinion piece in Geelong Advertiser, and that is the starting point for our discussion about climate change in The Sustainable Hour on 28 May 2014. |

| Summary: |
How to dance with the elephant in the room | This was the week where the word 'unstopable' melting of ice was introduced and sunk in - the fact that the ice at West Antarctica is melting faster than anyone had realised - and it is already around 20 years too late to do anything about this.
Unless we really begin to understand the seriousness of this planetary emergency and not only stop burning fossil fuels entirely, but also extract so much carbon out of the atmosphere that we get back to 1970-levels.
Why is climate action not a mass movement? Will we ever again have a clean conscience when we talk with our children in the decades to come? We talk with the president of Geelong Sustainability Group, Dave Campbell, about these urgent questions which a group of young, local citizens from the Australian Youth Climate Coalition raised to federal MP Sarah Henderson on 20 May 2014.
In The Sustainable Hour on 21 May 2014, we also talk about two great, local projects: the Greenways Project of planting 60,000 trees - and the Connecting to Country Aboriginal Arts Festival.
Guest in the studio: Dave Campbell, Geelong Sustainability Group [7:36-23:20]
Phone interview: Katja Nedoluha, Connecting to Country Aboriginal Arts Festival [23:27-40:33]

Show no 25: Climate crunch time on Budget Day. In Geelong, the annual budget was approved at a city council meeting on 13 April 2014. The new budget means cuts to the council's sustainability initiative, Future Proofing Geelong. The federal government released the budget for the nation as a whole on the same day. The national budget outlines a much longer list of climate safety-related energy reduction and renewable energy schemes and initiatives which now will be not only cut but stopped.
Guests:
* Lisa Gleeson, Red Cinema
* Mike Lawrence, CEO, Greenline Engineering
"What has happened to Australia's climate and energy policies the last 24 hours is a significant thing that people should be aware of. Approximately 15 billion dollars that would have been harvested through the current climate policy with a cost on pollution, a cost on carbon, will be lost to the budget. And if you extend that through to 2020, then that looks like 20 billion dollars which has come out of the budget. And yet there is a direct action program which is paying people to continue to pollute. It is just farcical," said Mike Lawrence, CEO, Greenline Engineering in this edition of The Sustainable Hour, the 25th in the series, where we also discuss what could cause politics and people to change, and how can we lobby more effectively for a a clean, green and bright future for our children and future generations.

| Summary: |
Why we go off the grid and grow edibles
In The Sustainable Hour on 30 April 2014 we seek to understand the arguments in the power games which currently are taking place between the citizens and the regulators. To stand up for what is right you must first understand what is wrong.
For instance, when you look at your electricity bill - which you may have noticed has doubled in just the last couple of years - do you understand exactly why it is that it has increased so much?
It is worth making yourself familiar with this, because apparently what has happened is that we, the consumers, are being ripped off. Tony Abbott blamed the Carbon Tax and won an election. Now he wants us to believe it is because of the Renewable Energy Target. The truth, according to a new report from Schneider Electric and a recent ABC radio documentary, is that we are charged billions of dollars for unnecessary infrastructure, wires and poles, while the companies that manufacture and set them up happily have shoveled in our money.
"In a very positive way you need to make yourself aware of what the solution is, and then get on with making it a part of your local life and your local environment," says Mike Lawrence, CEO, Greenline Engineering: "Be proactive about it. And work with your local politicians. By the end of the day, the logic of the renewable energy movement is just too clear and too strong to stop it or slow it down. We have got those that are digging the hills in, the black and brown coal energy generators - and it is a very powerful lobby group, probably the most powerful in the country - but their argument is becoming increasingly thin," Mike Lawrence explains.
Mark Hoffmann, chair of the Geelong Organic Gardeners, explains why Geelong's council claims that the banned practice of turning a nature strip into a vegetable garden "threatens residents and Geelong's international wetlands", while the truth is that communities benefit from the new trend of establishing public vegetable gardens in various ways - creating more biodiversity, sustainability and more interconnected neighbourhoods.
We also visit the Renew Geelong Picnic and talk with Dave Kerin from Earthworker Cooperative and Surf Coast Councillor Eve Fisher about community renewable energy solutions.

| Summary: |
We are both the problem and the solution. In this Earth Day Special, The Sustainable Hour explores what our relationship with the natural world means, what we can learn from looking at old civilisations that collapsed, and from traditional, indigenous people.
How moving from the 'take, make and waste' mentality to a 'borrow, use and return' principle along with conscious action that sustains life on Earth will help us rise to the challenge of transitioning away from burning fossil fuels and over to using non-polluting, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro.
The annual Anzac day is coming up in Australia, and local media is full of writing and talk about the ceremonies on 25 April which will commemorate those who fought or are fighting in wars.
No one is mentioning the "energy war" that is taking place in our societies at the moment - a citizen-powered battle against a combination of ignorance, prejudice and vested interests which, according to the climate scientists of the United Nations, threatens our civilisation at its foundation.
"This is London calling!" announced the speaker on the AM airwaves coordinating the underground resistance movement in Europe in the 1940s. What we are calling for here and now is not resistance, but awareness and clean energy solutions. Behavior change and community engagement is the next frontier in addressing climate change.
So, here you go: "This is The Pulse calling." We have to STOP burning up our planet.
"And we each have to plant 10 trees a year," adds Carl Callaway who encourages us with saying: "You can't imagine the impact that two people or a little group can have in the world."
Welcome to a radio show where we take the warnings seriously and where we would like to engage YOU as well in the discussion about what we hope Geelong will look like 50 years from now. Meet us in Eastern Park at the Renew Geelong event on Sunday where we will be broadcasting live.
Hope you will enjoy listening to this week's Sustainable Hour and see you at the Renew Geelong event, starting from Yarra Street at the waterfront at 10am on Sunday. www.thesolution.org.au/picnic

On 16 April 2014, The Sustainable Hour heads off for a seminar on unconventional gas mining to hear what the experts have to say about this controversial topic also known as 'fracking'.
The seminar 'Unconventional gas extraction and the social, economic and environmental impacts' took place at Melbourne University on 26 March 2014 and was transmitted via video conference to 11 different locations in Victoria - one of them Deakin University in Geelong.
We listen to excerpts of the presentations by Dr Jeremy Moss from from the Social Justice Initiative at Melbourne University who is co-author of the report 'Is fracking good for your health' and by Glen Martin who spoke over skype from Queensland. He is a lawyer and works in Toowoomba with landholders in South East Queensland who feel invaded by the gas mining industry.
We also hear a range of questions asked from the 11 different locations, answered by the panel which also featured professor Samantha Hepburn from School of Law at Deakin University, and Felicity Millner from the Environment Defenders Office.

| Summary: |
Change. Clean energy. Commitment. Community. Movement of the C's
Science confronts us with a question dominated by the letter C: Can we curb carbon emissions with clean energy in time to combat catastrophic climate change? The answer not only blows in the wind but is also full of compelling c's, because change now comes from communities and citizens who collaborate and commit themselves to finding clever solutions and create clean energy co-ops.
In the The Sustainable Hour on 9 April 2014 you can meet one of the change-makers in the forefront of a city's sustainability movement - a young citizen of Geelong, Daniel Cowdell, 33, who made up his mind to become an activist and start working with Geelong Sustainability Group.
Together with Friends of the Earth, Daniel Cowdell and Geelong Sustainability Group launches an eight-month campaign to put climate and clean energy on the state election agenda, asking: what does the climate change challenge which science present to us mean for Geelong and its citizens? What if we saw the challenge of curbing carbon emissions as an opportunity for creating new jobs developing and manufacturing cleantech technology and energy efficiency?
Margaret Rasa from Mount Alexander Sustainability Group highlights another example of brilliant change-making: Together with Energy for the People, Mount Alexander Sustainability Group has developed a clever way of building community solar for tenants and low-income demographics, so that people who can't afford solar can get it on their roof.
Meanwhile the Alternative Technology Association are preparing a report about the gas industry and how government currently is using tax payers' money to lock residents into a fossil fuel infrastructure which not only will become more and more expensive for them in the years to come, but also contributes to that pollution of the atmosphere which we know we need to stop. Craig Memery, renewable energy and smart networks specialist, explained about this at a seminar at Melbourne University about 'Quick Clean Energy Jobs For Victoria', held on 3 April 2014.
An American musician has launched a Climate Message Video Festival where performers make statements about climate change, while famous Hollywood actors now are launching a high profile tv-series about the topic. "It's the biggest story of our time," they state. |

Responding to climate change: introducing the 'nanooks' of Geelong
Okay. So the news is out. "Climate change - it's here". Front cover headlines. "UN: Climate change threatens billions of people". For a day, the release of the latest UN-report gave climate change a comeback on the front pages of many national newspapers around the world, the Age included.
So how are we supposed to respond to this?
In Geelong, a group of 10 young artists light up a projection-based show about climage change, a 45-minute performance about the polar bear Nanook who sets out to find out why the ice is melting, and what he can do about it.
In The Sustainable Hour you are going to meet the creator of the show, Trevor Maitland.
"The performance allows us to recognise we have a responsibility in our communities. And we can all become little Nanooks," says Trevor Maitland.
Today in the studio at 94.7 The Pulse, we talk with two of our local 'nanooks': electrical engineer Tim Clark, and Caroline Hawkins who is an anti-coal activist in Surf Coast Air Action. They share their thoughts on how we deal with the climate change issues, the choices we have and the changes we need to make.
Tim Clark is renovating old houses and turning them into smart, energy efficient homes of the 21st century, while Caroline Hawkins is advocating for the closure of an old coal-fired powerplant situated less than a kilometre from her home-town Anglesea. |

Community-owned solar. While over a million Australian house-owners have placed solar panels on their roof, only very few renewable energy projects have been launched where shareholders collectively invest in for instance a wind farm or a larger solar power plant. Around 40 communities in Australia are currently looking into the option of starting a renewables co-op. We talk with Aaron Lewtas, president of Surf Coast Energy Group, about an initiative of this nature which is on its way in Torquay, and we talk with Vivienne Burke from Geelong Sustainability Group about the monthly Green Drinks event and the One Planet Living principles which were on the agenda in the afternoon of 26 March 2014.

The Renewable Energy Declaration for Geelong |
| Summary: |
From doom to joy. [Warning: this podcast contains language which could be experienced as offending.]
The Sustainable Hour on 19 March 2014 looks into our choice between free and clean energy along with a safer climate on one hand, and expensive, polluting burning of carbon combined with catastrophic climate-doom with economic collapse on the other.
The choice would seem like a no-brainer. Even so, something is holding our elected leaders back when it comes to kick-starting the necessary transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro-power.
That "something" is not just conservatism or doubt. It is a - in the dual meaning of the word - "powerful" group of stake holders who refuse to let go of their source of immense profits.
However, with climate scientists' "official prophecy of doom" - as a headline in The Independent stated: "Official prophecy of doom: Global warming will cause widespread conflict, displace millions of people and devastate the global economy" - it really doesn't seem like we have much a choice.
And to that end there is another much more fun and optimistic story to be told - the story which is about all the exciting possibilities that follows once we have managed to liberate ourselves from our fossil fuel addiction. |

| Summary: |
Energy democracy. On 26 February 2013, The Sustainable Hour on 94.7 The Pulse was all about community-powered energy and the shift from using coal and gas to solar and wind.
We live in a democracy. But... how democratic are our energy structures?
Do we have any real choices – or are we living in an energy dictatorship?
Some people say 'Yes we are!' and want to revolt against that regime, because that energy we are being provided with from central power plants is generated by burning fossil fuels. As scientists keep warning us that this ongoing pollution of the atmosphere changes our climate and threatens the future of children and grandchildren in dramatic ways, and since governments currently aren't willing to create that change, communities are stepping in and doing it themselves. Kirsten Hasberg brings examples of this from Germany.
The future of energy is to harness sunbeams, wind blowing and river-water on the move. On 21 February 2014, The Sustainable Hour made an expedition to Melbourne to witness the world premiere of a film with exactly that title: 'The Future of Energy'.
